Climate Change & Environmental Management
With support from partners UMURDA came up with an innovation of Walugendo Jumbo
Tanks. Walugendo Jumbo Tanks are stone masonry tanks that hold large volumes of water. Is a local indigenous entrepreneurship innovation of big size stone masonry rain water harvesting tanks of storage capacities (100-500) M3 and above using locally available resources such as stones, sand, marram, aggregates and hardcore and locally sourced artisans. The innovation can serve institutions such as schools, Universities, Mosques and Churches with big populations for domestic, handwashing with soap, Menstrual Hygiene Management or adolescent girls in schools and as a resilient measure to climate change.
The Ministry of Water and Environment having approved the design of Walugendo Jumbo tanks, this year the application for Intellectual property rights to URSB was honored and permitted to go mass production.
Nearly 5% of the schools depend on Rainwater harvesting but the challenge is that the storage capacity is too small for the number of children.
